Carol Fox
Director of Music

Email Carol Carol was born in Louisville and was baptized and began school at Most Blessed Sacrament. At age 7 she was introduced to piano lessons. Her family moved to Shively, where her father, J. David Putnam, was an officer at the Bank of St. Helen’s. She spent grades 4-8 at St. Helen’s and went on to Angela Merici, where she began voice lessons. While at A.M., she discovered that playing piano was much more fun when accompanying singers. At Bellarmine, she earned a BA in English with a large side order of music courses, and worked as an accompanist in the voice studio. The next 4 years she spent in Iowa, California (where she spent 4 months on a Christian commune), and Michigan. She returned to Louisville with her husband, Alan, who had landed a job with the National Weather Service at Standiford Field. The marriage ended with a Declaration of Nullity from the Marriage Tribunal, and Carol returned to school for an MA in Religious Studies at Spalding University. She spent more than 13 years in parish ministry at St. Thomas More Church. Her title was Pastoral Associate, but her work took in a wide spectrum of activities. She was administrative assistant to the pastor, got the parish census and financials onto computer, made adult formation presentations, visited the sick, recruited and trained volunteers, and on and on. Her first love, however, was the world of ritual, symbol, and liturgy. When she became choir director in addition to her other duties at STM, the joy of matching music to worship became a passion. After leaving St. Thomas More, she went to work with her sister, Susan Putnam, in the IT department at Cardinal Aluminum Company. She joined Ss. Simon and Jude parish, where her mother, Dorothy Putnam, had for many years been a faithful and enthusiastic volunteer. She and Susan are still known at SSJ as “Dorothy’s daughters.”
Providentially, Carol was laid off in February 2009 from Cardinal Aluminum. This shake-up in her life allowed her to return to parish ministry. She feels supremely blessed that she was chosen to minister in music at OMOS. Very few people are privileged to earn a living doing what they love, and she thanks God and the OMOS community that she is one of them!
